Things I want my kids to know..

I was pretty sick for a good bit of last year. I started thinking about stuff I wished I told my kids, funny stories, advice, encouragement… not to eat yellow snow. You know how it goes.

I started a list with this title and promptly went no further. Recently, randomly, I thought of it again so here it is.

An ongoing list in no particular order .. but a start..

Be wary of any group, political party, religion, or individual who claim’s to have all the answers. No one has all the answers. People who make these statements will only lead you into trouble. Anything you can’t question, or can’t get an answer to – isn’t right.

Learn about the world. School will give you limited information, with most of it slanted towards the teachers beliefs. Always look for more information, the opposite view. Structure your opinion on YOUR conclusions, no one else’s.

Learn as much as you can about other cultures and beliefs so that you can better understand both the world and yourself.

You don’t have to.

Don’t forget to say thank you. To everyone, including the bus driver and girl at the drive through window.

Smile. It makes your heart full.

Listen. You don’t always have to be the one talking.

If you want a good friend, BE a good friend. These people will stick with you through anything.

Sing – and sing loudly. It’s ok if you’re off key, just do it. Enjoy yourself.

Wear your seatbelt!

Set goals. Reach them. Set new ones.

Push yourself!

Tell people you love them.

I love you, so very much

Never use your cellphone while driving. It’s just not worth the risk. And I will kill you myself.

NEVER get in the car with someone who has been drinking. NEVER.

Always vote. There is too much history to take this privilege for granted. What you have to say can make a difference.

It’s ok to say No. Mean it when you say it.

Have some humility. There is a fine line between confident and just being a prick.

Nothing bad has happened tomorrow. It’s a new day, fresh for the taking.

There are very few situations you’ll encounter in life that can’t be made more bearable by songs you love. Keep music in your heart.

Nothing I’ll ever accomplish will be more important or more significant than being your mum. You’ll feel the same way when you have kids…after you turn 40 and I let you start dating.

Be kind, people won’t remember how many A’s you got in tests or how many goals you scored but they’ll never forget the time they needed a friend and you were there. Be someone’s happy memory.

Never let the love of money be the only love in your life

The most important person you should like is yourself

I’ll say it again, I love you. No matter what.

  1. What a fantastic idea!
I hope you’re feeling much better this year.
    1. I’d like to propose an edit. In regards to singing. Please, don’t tell your kids to sing off key, at the top of their lungs in public… It boggles my mind that some people actually do that. Just a random person at a bus stop. Not performing.
    2. “You’ll feel the same way when you have kids…after you turn 40 and I let you start dating.” Absolutely hilarious.

  2. Enjoyed this post immensely. I could sense the love for your kids through it. And although there is wisdom to floatinggold’s edit, I would still say go for it. Singing is wonderful, off key or not.

  3. Wit and wisdom. Great combo!. “Nothing bad has happened tomorrow.” Great angle on the idea of being present and not worrying about the future. And I can’t wait to see how your 40-year-olds handle dating for the first time!!
